About Wazuka Tea

Wazuka Town

Wazuka Town is located in the southern part of Kyoto.

The town is dotted with tea fields and is known as "Chagenkyo (Tea Topia)." This area's landscape was the first to be registered as a scenic spot in Kyoto Prefecture for its cultural significance and way of life, deserving preservation for future generations. In 2015, it was also recognized as a "Japan Heritage" site.

Wazuka Tea

Wazuka Tea is a type of tea produced in Wazuka Town, Kyoto Prefecture, and is considered one of the Uji teas. Among Uji teas, it is particularly renowned for its fragrant aroma and is the most widely produced tea in Kyoto Prefecture.

The delicious flavor of Wazuka Tea is said to be a result of the refreshing, cool air and the significant temperature differences between day and night. Wazuka is home to the Wazuka River, which flows through the town, and lush forests, creating an environment where mist often forms. This mist gently envelops the tea leaves, with nature helping to provide shade, enhancing the tea's rich flavor.

Production of Wazuka Tea

In the 2022 fiscal year, Wazuka Town produced 47.5% (approximately 1,137 tons) of the raw tea grown in Kyoto Prefecture. Additionally, Wazuka Town was responsible for 51.1% (approximately 458 tons) of the tencha, the raw material used for making matcha.
